1st graders apply phonemic awareness and decoding strategies

During the lesson, Mrs. Turner modeled and demonstrated strategies to help students sound out words and know what to do when they encountered a word that was unfamiliar to them.  She taught them “Lips the Fish” - get your lips ready and “Stretchy Snake” – stretch out the word to hear all sounds.  The lesson included whole group with the big book and guided practice with hands on manipulatives.  1st grade students are on their way to becoming independent readers!
