KVA Swim Interest 2021
Kerr-Vance Academy Swim Team 2021-2022
It’s hard to believe, but our winter sports will be gearing up shortly at Kerr-Vance Academy. We are excited to enter our 4th year of our swimming program for our students. Below is some basic information to see if swimming is right for your child. Please keep in mind that all practice times and days listed below will change as we await the final schedule from the Aquatics Director at Aycock Recreation Center. We will need to know our number of swimmers soon in order to determine how many lanes we will need for practice. Please email Julie Moseley, at jmoseley@kerrvance.com, if your child is interested, and/or if you have any questions.
Practices: Practices are tentatively scheduled right now for Monday through Thursday for an hour (ish) each day. We swim most of the time at Aycock Recreation Center. Sometimes we can practice at the YMCA of Henderson, but since the Y does not have starting blocks, we will have most practices at Aycock. We are trying to get practice times around 3:30 or 4 for about an hour to an hour and a half. Our weight room is also open to us for optional weight training days. There is no penalty for missed practices and we work with everyone. School comes first so rest assured that your child can miss here and there to focus on school.
Qualifications: All swimmers need to be able to swim a 50-the length of the pool and back. Other than that, we can help with everything else, strokes, dives, and turns. We’ve had amazing swimmers come to us not being able to dive so please don’t let that deter you.
Gear: We have an account with Swim Outlet and we will give you the information once you let us know of your child’s interest. Basically everyone needs a navy and orange team suit, or a plain navy suit and a practice suit. They need goggles with a back up pair, a towel, and a cap. For the more serious swimmers, flippers and paddles would be helpful though not required.
Goals: While we are a team, swimming is mainly an individual sport. Our goal is to grow as swimmers, improve times, gain confidence, and encourage each other and those we compete against. We swim against some excellent teams that have welcomed us with open arms.
Meets: We typically have meets in Rocky Mount, Winterville, and New Bern. We may possibly host our own this year as well, depending on Rec Center Covid Guidelines. Students swim in free style, back stroke, breast stroke, relays and butterfly. They do not have to swim them all. We would like for everyone to participate in our conference championship as well as states if we qualify. Individual swimmers qualify based on their qualifying times as outlined by the State. Even swimmers that do not qualify individually can swim in the relays at the State Championships.
Carpool: We should be able to carpool again this year to practices as well as meets. I can usually take 2 or 3 other swimmers and we have awesome parents that don’t mind taking others as well.
We welcome everyone regardless of swim level and we work together to become better swimmers. We are so excited to get back into the pool. Come join us!
Sincerely,
Julie Moseley
